This tour takes students on an exploration of the historical forces and factors leading to WW1 and WW2, and Australia’s involvement - from the evolution of the weapons of war to the misery of trench warfare, the growing industrialisation of war and the stories of those caught up in conflict. 

Students come away with a greater understanding of the scope and nature of warfare, the scale of devastation of WWI and WW2, and the social and political impacts and consequences of war.

Day 1-2

Depart Australia ⤑ Arrive in London

Day 2-4

London

Discover the stories and lives shaped by war and conflict from 1914 to the present day.  Go underground at the Churchill War Rooms – learn about the UK’s war efforts and planning for D-Day in 1945.  Take in London’s iconic sights.  

Day 5-8

Lille ⤑ Ypres

Tour the WWI battlefield sites & towns of the Western Front - Arras, Ypres, the Somme, Flanders, Passchendaele, and Hill 60.  Visit the Australian National Memorial, Monash Centre, Menin Gate & Langemark Cemetery.  Workshop at In Flanders Field Museum.  

Day 9-11

Berlin

Explore the city’s history – from Weimar Republic to Nazi totalitarianism, Cold War partition to German re-unification.  Tour sites connected to the Nazi takeover of power and atrocities of the Holocaust at Sachsenhausen.  See the Reichstag Dome, Berlin Wall and Memorial to Murdered Jews.  

Day 12-13

Nuremberg

Potent symbol of the Third Reich – tour the Parade Grounds Memorial, Documentation Centre and Palace of Justice incl Courtroom 600 – from war crimes trials to a new international justice framework.

Day 13-14

Depart Germany ⤑ Arrive in Australia
