Embark on a dynamic and immersive study tour of Japan designed specifically for history educators interested in deepening their understanding of Japanese history and culture.
Travelling through Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka, this program offers a rich historical exploration from early state formation and classical court culture through to modern conflict, memory, and global transformation.
The tour will be led by experienced teacher and creator of ‘History Skills’, Michael Cocks.
By experiencing key historical sites firsthand, teachers will connect syllabus content with place, enriching both their understanding and their classroom practice.

Absolutely!
We are glad to welcome anyone with an interest in the subject matter to join the tour. Non-teachers may choose to opt out of lectures or debrief sessions that relate directly to the teaching profession.

A moderate level of physical fitness is required in order to participate fully in the tour. Specifically you should be able to walk for 3-4 hours with only short breaks, walk up and down stairs, move on and off coaches unassisted, negotiate stairs and slopes, and manage your own luggage.

ON TOUR EDUCATOR
Michael Cocks
Senior History Teacher | Creator of History Skills
This tour will be led by Michael Cocks, who is an award-winning senior history teacher at The Glennie School in Toowoomba, Queensland. Michael is the creator of the History Skills website and YouTube channel and has been a contributing author for textbooks for Cambridge University Press and the History Teachers Association of Victoria. He has been involved in conference presentations, podcast and magazine interviews, YouTube collaborations, online guest articles, or various History Skills social media events.
Michael has over 15 years classroom teaching experience, including senior Ancient History, senior Modern History, and junior years topics from grades 7-10 under the Australian Curriculum. He has spent many years travelling across the globe to see historical sites first-hand, including Cambodia, Ethiopia, Peru, Italy, Japan and Egypt.
Michael will be leading the group as the on tour educator, facilitating group discussions, daily debriefs and syllabus linking. He will be providing teachers with both an introductory lecture prior to the tour, as well as a workbook to take on tour.
