This tour takes students on an exploration of Australia’s modern history - from Indigenous culture to migration and settlement, transportation to the Victorian goldrush, the Australian Federation movement to parliamentary democracy.

Students come away with a greater understanding of some of the people, events and achievements shaping Australian society, and insights into the experiences and contributions of different groups.

Day 1

Depart Sydney ⤑ Arrive in Hobart

Day 1-5

Hobart & surrounds

Hear the stories of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture and history, and impact of European colonisation. Learn about the harsh realities of convict life at Port Arthur and the Female Factory, and explore the colonial settlements that grew out of the transportation system. Focus on Australia’s connections to Antarctica and get immersed in art, old and new, at MONA.

Day 5-8

Melbourne & surrounds

Fly to Melbourne. Engage with the history of migration and settlement and its impact on Melbourne’s social history. Explore the impact of the 1850s goldrush at Ballarat – Eureka Stockade and Sovereign Hill. Visit the sites that tell the story of Australian Federation. Enjoy a Yarra River cruise. Fly to Canberra.

Day 8-10

Canberra

See parliamentary democracy in action and learn about the Constitution. Workshop Australian experience of operational and wartime service. Understand the role played by the High Court of Australia.
