This tour takes students on a journey through the stunning natural landforms and ecosystems of Big Island and Oahu – from active volcanoes to black sand beaches, astronomy and the science of tsunamis, to Polynesian culture and history.  

Students come away with a greater understanding of Hawaiian scientific research and innovation in the areas of environmental and marine science, atmospheric studies, volcano and tsunami monitoring, astrophysics and astronomy.

Day 1

Depart Australia ⤑ Arrive in Honolulu
⤑ transfer to The Big Island

Day 2

Learn about ocean-based sustainable technologies.  Then explore the origins of the universe from scientific & cultural perspectives at the Imiloa Astronomy Centre

Day 3

Experience flowing lava, steam vents, active volcanoes and forest ecology in the rugged landscape of Volcanoes National Park.

Day 4

Learn about the science of tsunamis and the Pacific Tsunami Warning System.  Then visit the frozen-in-time forest at Lava Tree State Park

Day 5

Explore the underwater world of tropical fish & coral with a biologist.  Then delve into Hawaii’s agricultural heritage and get hands-on at a pineapple plantation.

Day 6

Return to Oahu.  Tour the Pearl Harbour Historic Site, naval base and USS Missouri battleship and learn about their connections to US involvement in WWII.

Day 7

Take a field trip to explore issues of ocean acidification and marine biodiversity and get hands-on with plankton and seaweed. 

Day 8

Hike to the top of Diamond Head Crater, explore the rich heritage and distinct cultures of Polynesia and swim Waikiki

Day 9-10

Depart Honolulu ⤑ Arrive in Australia
