This tour takes teachers on an immersive journey through modern US history – from the impact of the Great Depression, industrialisation, the early campaigns against lynching and segregated education and the fight for racial and political equality for African Americans. 

Through lectures and guided tours with experts, teachers have opportunities to refresh and deepen their subject knowledge and teaching practice, and bring innovative ideas, techniques and resources back to the classroom.

Participants on this tour will be able to register for PL hours (depending on subjects taught) in your NESA teacher accreditation hours in ETAMS.

Tour Highlights

  • Engage with the history of the Civil Rights movement in the American South with visits to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

  • Traverse the Gettysburg battlefield with a local expert guide – site of Lincoln’s famous address.

  • Delve into US history from 1919 to 1941 with guided tours of key historic sites in Memphis and the National Museum of American History in Washington DC.

  • Gain first-hand impressions of the impact of The Great Depression at the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark – offering the context to explore post war migration, industrialisation and the pervasive impact of segregation.

  • Investigate the life and times of JFK with entry to the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas in the Texas Schoolbook Depository.

  • Combine syllabus-aligned activities with sightseeing and free time in the cities of Dallas, Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta and Washington DC.

FAQ’s

  • Age:  Participants must be over 18 years of age to participate in the program

    Travel documentation:  

    Participants must ensure that they:

    • Have a valid passport with six months’ validity from their return date to Australia

    • Obtain any required visas for travel to the destination country, plus any additional visas required for holders of non-Australian passports

    • Obtain their own travel insurance

  • Participants on this tour will be able to register for PL hours (depending on subjects taught) in your NESA teacher accreditation hours in ETAMS.

  • Register Interest to join the mailing list for updates on this tour. Once the tour reaches its minimum interest requirement of attending teachers, you will receive a copy of the booking form and tour payment schedule. A non-refundable deposit will then be payable to confirm your place.

    The final balance of the tour price is due 120 days prior to departure.

  • You certainly can! Anyone can travel on our PL tours, however, non-teachers should be aware the content will be targeted to the relevant syllabus and based on a certain level of prior knowledge. Should any participant choose not to attend one of the planned activities, there would be no refund for an unused portion of the tour.

    Please note - Participants must be over 18 years of age to attend the tour, and attendees who are not teachers in Australia may not be able to acquire PL hours or tax deductions.


Your On-Tour Academic Expert - Samantha Frappell

Samantha Frappell is a senior Modern History teacher with a PhD in History from the University of Sydney. She has written a range of history texts for primary and secondary students, including Civil Rights in the USA (Small Caps, 2022). Her interests include American, Japanese, film, Medieval and Australian history.
