This tour takes students on an exploration of the rich and diverse literary traditions of Ireland, UK and France – from Shakespearean classics, the Romanticism of Wordsworth and Keats, the post-modernism of Beckett and Heaney, to the absurdism of Camus.

Students come away with a greater understanding of the landscapes, settings and events that writers have taken as their context and inspiration.

Day 1-2

Depart Australia ⤑ Arrive in Dublin

Day 2-3

Dublin

Explore Dublin’s literary heritage through the eyes of Swift, Shaw, Beckett, Heaney and Joyce. Tour Trinity College incl. Book of Kells, Beckett workshop and performance at the Gaiety Theatre.

Day 4

Stratford-upon-Avon

Visit Shakespeare’s House, tour ‘behind the scenes’ at the Swan Theatre and attend an evening performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Day 5

Warwick & Bath

A workshop on the craft of writing focussed on TS Eliot’s poetry. Explore Bath and the Georgian sites synonymous with Jane Austen’s critique of class and manners. 

Day 6-10

Oxford & London

Discover Oxford’s rich literary history and historic Magdalen College – focus on the works of Lewis and Heaney.  

Then explore a truly global city -- from a Shakespearean workshop to immersion in the writings of Dickens, Keats, Donne and Orwell.  Visit Warner Bros plus evening performances at The Globe & West End show.

Day 11-12

Paris

Train to Paris. Literature Tour of sites linked to Stein, Fitzgerald and Hemingway through to de Beauvoir, Sartre and Camus.  Tour cultural centres & Versailles.  Evening performance at the Theatre des Nouveautes.

Day 13-14

Depart Paris ⤑ Arrive in Australia
