This tour takes students on an exploration of the rich and diverse literary traditions of Ireland and UK – from Shakespearean classics, the Romanticism of Wordsworth and Keats, through to the post-modernism of Beckett and Heaney. 

Students come away with a greater understanding of the landscapes, settings and events that writers have taken as their context and inspiration.

Day 1-2

Depart Australia ⤑ Arrive in Dublin

Day 2-3

Dublin

Explore Dublin’s literary heritage through the eyes of Swift, Shaw, Beckett, Heaney and Joyce. Tour Trinity College incl Book of Kells. A Beckett workshop and evening performance at Gaiety Theatre.

Day 4

Manchester

Arrive Manchester for a creative writing tutorial/workshop, and study of Gaskell’s depiction of gender, class and industrialisation in North and South.

Day 5

Cumbria – Lake District

Tour Dove Cottage and explore the Lake District landscapes inspiring Wordsworth. Visit the Parsonage Museum & wild moorlands depicted by the Brontes.

Day 6

Stratford-upon-Avon

Visit Shakespeare’s House, tour ‘behind the scenes’ at the Swan Theatre and attend an evening performance by the RSC.

Day 7

Oxford

Explore Oxford’s rich literary history and visit historic Magdalen College - focus on the works of Lewis and Heaney.

Day 8-12

London

Explore a truly global city - from a Shakespearean workshop to immersion in the writings of Dickens, Keats & Bloomsbury set, intensive screenwriting workshop & visit to Warner Bros. Performances at The Globe & West End musical.

Day 13-14

Depart London ⤑ Arrive in Australia
